I am choosing to learn basic programming and game design, so as to learn how to make an android based mobile game with Casey Haley. I am a video game enthusiast, and I aspire to be a computer engineer one day. This capstone combines two of my favorite things, being technology and video games. I was initially going to have Casey teach me what I'd get were I to be in Computer Science at school, which is java. After meeting a few times, I quickly realized that this was a mundane task that I'd likely have to repeat upon going to college since I am technically not getting credit for it. As a result, we decided to do something that interested us both, but neither of us have much experience in, and settled on game design. We hang out a lot together and working in the software we chose, Unreal Engine, has become an enjoyable free time activity of ours over the past weeks, as we uncover more and more of its secrets each time we play around with it. That’s the biggest reason I settled on my capstone project.
Initially, I simply knew I wanted to do something with technology. I later narrowed it down to something software related, because I want a little bit of background in software before I jump into being a computer hardware engineer. In our Project, casey and I will be designing a 2d-side-scrolling android app using the Unreal Engine platform. We will be using comedic elements including our friends faces, inside jokes, and voices to add personality to our app. We intend for it to have many basic game elements such as destructible enemies, various obstacles, basic blocks, simple objectives, and a multitude of levels and characters. Our project will be known as “The game of Idiots”. I have selected the self-development strand because it seems like the one that would benefit me most not only in my career choice, but just in acquiring a new skill. I hope to accomplish learning the basics of android game development, as well as the basic components necessary for Unreal Engine, which can be used for much more than simple android apps. It will entail for Casey and I to watch hours of tutorial video to get an idea for all of the nuanced features Unreal Engine has to offer, as well as executing what we learn. It really will entail nothing but Casey, me, a couple computers, and hours worth of work and learning. It will require no money, and really a very limited amount of outside help from any mentor.
This project will hopefully allow me to explore the basics of a possible career field, game design, and if not at least create the possibility of a new hobby while acquiring new skills. I hope to be able to have deeper appreciation for all of the most complex games I play, and also the simplest of android apps. I have absolutely no background in game creation or programming for that matter, but so far Unreal Engine seems to be very user intuitive, and there are many great tutorials on YouTube. I expect Casey knows a few things about how app design works, but it is a largely unexplored field for both of us, which is largely why we were drawn to it. It will be challenging to balance my school workload, my 8 clubs, and this but I believe experiencing something that could change my future career choice is worth the effort and time, and the impact is softened because I have someone else to help me through it.
I have already decided I want to go into the field of technology, right now I am looking at computer hardware engineering, or nanotechnology. However, I am very passionate about video games, it is by far my number one hobby, so I can definitely see myself changing to that if I like how this project goes. If this project is not enough to alter my major choice, then at least I have a new hobby to play around with for the enjoyment of myself and those around me. This will have a great impact on Casey and I obviously. Casey more so, because he already wants to go into software so this could be the specific path he chooses to take in college, but our friends will also play a crucial role in our project, and hopefully they’ll get enjoyment out of our game as well.
