Today Casey worked on finding a way to set a mapped key to change from one character sprite to another. However, we were struggling to find resources on this and ran out of ideas so we decided to move on to progress farther in the creation process, coming back to it later. I found a decently sized desktop background to use for the game's backdrop for our friend Sri, who is a tennis player. I leaned how to blend in Photoshop and removed the bright purple advertisement in the corner of the frame. As seen below in the 4th picture our character can jump, and we have basic environment sprites extracted for us to utilize. I worked on some hand drawn level design concepts, but I don't have full idea of our technical capabilities with Unreal Engine, so I am not sure how practical they are. We started building a basic platforming level design. We took a video to show progress, but it's too large to post here so we'll include it later.

Casey and I worked on animating the sprites, and organizing our capstone files. I worked on our environment pieces in Photoshop, as Casey animated the character sprites I sent him. We spent about 45 min watching the walk through video, and now have general understanding of camera angles, jump and run scaling, applying changes to our character capsule, and setting which animation is to be used when certain actions take place. For example using the run animation then jumping when a key is pressed and returning to the run animation upon landing. We learned some basic environment tweaks as well and hope to start building the level soon.
I created the two final sprite animation pages for Christian's character, as well as Marcus'. I again did this with the Photoshop knowledge I acquired last work session. Took about an hour in total, as I have become much more adept at using the basic Photoshop transformation tools.
It turns out Unreal Engine creates PC games so it is not, as I previously stated, an android game. We worked on getting in some of our basic elements today. I used basic Photoshop, and a character template to create a character palate for one character to be in our game. Each picture will serve as a different animation in our game. We plan on having a different character for our entire friend group. Casey was further looking into tutorials for inputing character and landscape sprites. We downloaded some reference files from Unreal's website to possibly implement into our game. I am continuing to learn basic Photoshop to create the files we need for sprites.
Casey and I (as outlined in my Statement of Intent) have decided to create an android game together. We found the software we are going to use (Unreal Engine). We also found a great intriductory video on their YouTube channel that goes step by step throught the creation process of our specific app type. We have messed around in the program ourselves as well disovering a few of the features on our own. Lastly, we have come up with an idea for our game, future blogs incoming to chronicle its progress, and implementation.
Casey Haley and I spent about 2 hours learning how to use Android Studio, which is the software we intend to use to make an app by the end of the year. We learned how to edit some color and appearance things, as well as create a clickable button. We are still working on embedding a .jpg file to appear when the button is pressed. Our goal by the end of the year is to create an app that can benefit one of the school departments, while still being entertaining.
I plan on doing a tandem project with Casey Haley, in which we learn how to program an android app together. The learning curve will be greater for me, because I have never taken a programming class before. However, Casey is very adept at coding and has a father that can aid us if we get stuck. We are both very passionate about technology and think that this will be a helpful learning experience for the both of us.
